Included are letters, publications, clippings, and notes, relating to Miss Barrows' work in education; a manuscript for an autobiography which she never completed; some family material, particularly concerning Charles Dana Barrows (1846-1892); a genealogy of the Prentice family; deeds (1820-1839) from Fryeburg, Maine; notes on impressions of Thomas Brackett Reed; photographs of family members; and a photocopy of an article about her in Urban Education (v. 9, no. 3, Oct. 1974) by Raymond A. Mohl titled Urban education in the twentieth century: Alice Barrows and the platoon school plan.

Thomas Brackett Reed (October 18, 1839 – December 7, 1902), was an American politician from the state of Maine, and was a member of the Republican Party. Alice Prentice Barrows was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Congregational ministers and died in New York City in 1954. She graduated from Vassar College in 1900 and became a teacher. She later became a noted specialist in school building problems and devoted forty-one years to the cause of education, twenty-three of them in the U.S. Office of Education.
